I am puzzled. The few times I have encountered "cannot execute binary
file"-like messages (in other contexts) was when trying to run a binary
in an incompatible computer architecture.
Just a shot in the dark: were you running in the same machine where you
compiled/linked? And were you using consistent gfortran versions (local
vs the one used to produce the .tar.gz)? Do you have several gfortran
versions installed concurrently on your machine?
