If you can choose take a new one like the Fedora 19 or 20 (get the
spins w/o gnome for better performances)
Those will be used as reference for the RedHat Linux 7 like
distributions (CentOS 7, Scientific Linux 7 etc...)

If you want/need to use CentOS 6.5 or Scientific Linux 6.5 with on 64
bits you need to install a new compiler toolchain to replace the default
4.4.7. There's a good package for that here:
http://people.centos.org/~tru/devtools-1.1/6/x86_64/RPMS/

Also the ubuntu 12.04 LTS looks ok.
