  you can link whatever the compile support as for example c or c++.
g77/gcc is maintained for compatibility not sure how long still.

Flupix is very good for beginner but has of course limitations, in case
I would suggest you to install a linux virtual machine from scratch
which include a recent compiler. CentOS 7 includes the gcc/gfortran
4.8.2 and installing Fluka is supereasy with yum, which will take care
of all the dependencies.
It also run out of the box on fedora 19 and fedora 20. With Ubuntu you
might experience some very minimal trouble in case you are not practical
with the package management.
