[fluka-discuss]: RE: Region Volumes in Dose calculation

Hello Lefteris,

Thanks for the confirmation of my understanding.
The derived dose-rates need to be within a factor of 2 or so (hopefully) because they are used to predict lifetimes of the cameras which will be located in the tunnel.

I guess that USRBIN and the FLUKA tools would be much easier than my semi-manual method, which involves exporting via text files into EXCEL to analyse multiple runs :)

Regards,
Mark

Hi Mark,

Indeed the units of the values are given in the header.
The energy density is given in GeV/cm^3/primary and is pretty straight forward when the volume of the regions are given.
What might be confusing is the fact that, when you do not put any volume size in the region definition the default normalisation of volume is 1 cm^3. Therefore, the "energy density", in the default case, corresponds to the (total energy deposited in the region)/primary.

On another note, I would recommend that you use the special USRBIN (region) [what(1)=12] to score in binary files the unit of interest (e.g. ENERGY) so that you can use the fluka tools to sum up different runs in order to acquire better statistics.

Kind regards

Lefteris

Subject: [fluka-discuss]: Region Volumes in Dose calculation
Dear FLUKA Users,

I would like to check my understanding of the way that FLUKA uses Region Volume information in the output table of Energy by Region (which I am using to calculate Dose by Region).
I have entered volumes (obtained outside FLUKA, from the 'SimpleGeo' program) by means of the REGION cards. These values appear correctly in the data column of the output, and are used by FLUKA to derive the ENERGY column of the table, as shown in the extract below:-

1Region # name volume ENERGY Density Star Density Star Density Star Density
                in cubic cm GeV/cm**3 Stars/cm**3 Stars/cm**3 Stars/cm**3
/one beam particle /one beam particle /one beam particle /one beam particle

      1 BLKHOLE 3.630000000E+11 6.663278159E-15 0.000000000E+00 0.000000000E+00 0.000000000E+00
      2 ENTSPACE 7.853981600E+05 1.160100087E-09 0.000000000E+00 0.000000000E+00 0.000000000E+00
      3 GRAPHITE 5.026550000E+03 3.559295749E-05 0.000000000E+00 0.000000000E+00 0.000000000E+00

Previously, before I entered these volumes explicitly, the FLUKA output showed 1 cubic cm in the 'volume' column, which I assume was a default value.

I would just like to confirm that I am following the correct procedure, because the Dose values are critical results for my project.

Thank you.

Mark
