I am not sure how do I normalize for the volume. Isn't USRBIN's result is already normalized per volume except if "region" is chosen as a binning type?

it seems to me that you did not normalize correctly for the volume... you
used a cartesian USRBIN to do the 1D scan of a sphere, then without further
normalization you should expect effect on the borders.
