RE: AW: DaVis.3D Plug-in

Hi Lawrence,

Actually DaVis3D is not required to be attached to the run, but it is a
plugin which extends the functions of SimpleGeo to post-process,
visualize and analyze FLUKA USRBIN and other mesh data.

For example in my case I run my simulations on our Linux cluster and
afterwards I copy the created USRBIN files to my Windows machine. If you
install Samba for example then you won't even have to use SFTP or
anything alike but simply drag & drop the files via your explorer which
is pretty convenient. Afterwards I start SimpleGeo, load the geometry &
DaVis3D and use it for post-processing & the visualization of my results
superimposed onto my geometry.

Please note that DaVis3D only supports ASCII formatted FLUKA USRBIN
files for post-processing & visualization for reasons of portability and
due to severe technical shortcomings in the old FORTRAN 77 standard that
have only been fixed in the 2003 edition of the standard.

Cheers

Chris

Hie Chris and all fluka users

Thank you so much for your help .I appreciate. From my own understanding
of your e-mail , i should have simplegeo on a windows machine.
Well i have it installed on a windows machine already together with
DaVis.3D and PipsCad and it works very well.My simulations are running
on a separate machine on openSUSE 10.3 .I understand DaVis.3D must be
attached to a run.How do i interface the two machines inoder to attach
the plug-in to a run and yet the two machine use different operating
systems.Or is it possible to have fluka running on lunix then take the
output file by USB memory stick and process my results on a windows
machine but that way the plug-in wont be attached to a run.

How do i proceed?
Please advise
Cheers

Lawrence

Hi Lawrence,

This message is related to the macro compiler which is embedded in
SimpleGeo. I'm (ab)using some part of the Windows scripting host to do
the parsing for my compiler and under Wine this functionality is not
available. However, you can simply ignore that message as it does not
have an impact on the modeler itself. Yet, it indicates that you won't
be able to use SimpleGeo's macro language while running under Wine. For
these features you need to run the software in its native Windows
environment which is what I would recommend.

I've experienced that running SimpleGeo under Wine very much depends on
the actual Linux distribution that you are using and the libraries that
are installed. For example I had no problem doing it under Suse or the
latest Ubuntu distribution, but when using Scientific Linux 5.0 Wine
starts to complain about missing system libraries. Furthermore, your
graphics driver will most probably not support hardware acceleration
under Wine which means that the graphics could be slow! Thus, as a
general recommendation one should run graphics software, especially 3D
software, in their native environment to benefit from all graphics
driver optimizations!

Cheers

Chris

Dear Fluka users
I am trying to install Wine inorder to use DaVis3D to process USRBIN
results after a fluka run.
After configuring wine i tried to open simplegeo and yes i can open it
and import the input file from fluka, i can see the csg tree of the
input file but i can not see the geometry. The moment i try to generate
the geomentry i receive the following message 'failed to create
scripting engine'.
i don't know what could be the problem.who can help me? it looks i am
almost there.

Hi Lawrence,

of course you could run your simulations via a FLUPIX bootable CD on a
machine which is usually running Windows. However, in that case you
would have to reboot to switch between the two operating systems. It
might be more comfortable using VirtualBox under Windows to run FLUPIX,
which is basically the Knoppix Linux distribution + a preinstalled
FLUKA. You can find more information in the section "Installation for
running through Virtual Box" at

http://www.fluka.org/content/tools/flupix/index.html

Please note that the Knoppix distribution is commonly targeted to be a
"clean & lean" distribution. Thus, you might find some restrictions as
compilers or popular software packages which you probably know from
other systems might not be included. However, using VirtualBox you can
basically install whichever Linux distribution you favor to run in a
virtual machine in parallel to your Windows system (see
http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Guest_OSes ) This of course would mean
that you would have to install FLUKA manually but it would also provide
you with a higher level of flexibility. So it's up to your preference.

Cheers

Chris

Hi Lawrence=3D2C<br>
=3D20<br>
due to a lack of resources I unfortunately cannot provide a Linux =
version o=3D<br>
f SimpleGeo for the time being. In principle you could run it under =
Linux v=3D<br>
ia =3D93Wine=3D94 =3D96 I have managed to do it but it required the =
latest versio=3D<br>
n of several Linux libraries etc. Yet=3D2C it will still lack hardware =
accele=3D<br>
ration and thus=3D2C the graphics might be rather slow. In general the =
suppor=3D<br>
t for 3D graphics under Linux is still somewhat limited in comparison to =
ot=3D<br>
her platforms.=3D20<br>
=3D20<br>
In case you do not have access to a Windows machine you could run =
Windows i=3D<br>
n a virtual machine under Linux using for example Sun=3D92s Virtual box =
(www.=3D<br>
virtualbox.org) which is available free of charge.<br>
=3D20<br>
Within the next weeks there will be a new release of SimpleGeo 4.0 + a =
new =3D<br>
version of DaVis3D which includes more options also for profile =
extraction.=3D<br>
&nbsp; In case you would like to try the pre-release just send me an =
e-mail.<br>
=3D20<br>
Hope that helps<br>
