Introduction
CERN's ambitious scientific endeavour cannot be undertaken without
tight safety and radiation protection measures. Join the team of
specialist professionals dedicated to radiation protection, and make your
mark in ensuring that the environment in which CERN achieves its results
is both very safe, and without any harm from ionizing radiation. Take
Part!
You will join CERN's Radiation Protection Group, which is part of the
Occupational Health& Safety and Environmental Protection (HSE) Unit,
assisting the Director-General and providing support to the Organization
for the implementation and application of CERN's Safety Policy, by closely
monitoring the introduction and implementation of safety objectives with a
view to constant improvement of working and operating conditions, as well
as environmental and radiation protection.
Functions
As a physicist in the Radiation Protection Group you will be
responsible for radiation protection for accelerators, experiments and
auxiliary facilities. You will also participate in design studies for
upgrades of existing installations and beam-lines and as well as studies
for construction and dismantling of future accelerators and particle
physics experiments. More specifically, you will:
# Perform radiological risk assessments applying:
* radiation protection measurement techniques;
* radiation protection calculations, including Monte Carlo
calculations;
* knowledge in radiation protection legislation and best
practices.
# Implement radiation protection requirements and participate in the
development and optimisation of measures to protect personnel and
environment by:
* defining the radiation protection requirements to be respected
during beam operation, maintenance, repair and dismantling of a
facility or experiment;
* providing advice to scientific and technical units during the
design phase, operation, maintenance and dismantling of a
facility or experiment;
* establishing facility- and experiment-related radiation
protection procedures.
# Direct the work of technical personnel.
Qualification required
University degree in physics or engineering with a specialization in
nuclear physics, radiation protection or related fields. A Ph.D. would be
an asset.
Experience and competencies
* Experience in operational radiation protection, instrumentation
and design studies for high energy accelerators and particle
physics experiments.
* Experience in the use of Monte-Carlo radiation transport
programs for radiation protection studies.
* Knowledge of radiation exposure and protection;
* Knowledge of EU regulations: radiation protection and safety;
* Communicating effectively: demonstrates an ability to express
and explain ideas in a convincing manner;
* Setting direction: provides the necessary information and
direction to enable staff to work effectively; coordinates,
delegates and monitors team activities;
* Demonstrating flexibility: is willing and able to adjust to
changing demands and circumstances;
* Managing self: works well autonomously; takes initiative beyond
regular tasks and makes things happen.
* Good knowledge of either English or French. Basic knowledge of
the other language or an undertaking to acquire it rapidly.

Subject to certain conditions, holders of limited-duration
contracts may be granted an indefinite contract.
* These functions may require work outside normal CERN working
hours, including nights, weekends and public holidays, and may
entail shift work and the participation in a regular stand-by
service.
* These functions require work in a controlled radioactive
environment.
