Dear Viktor,
indeed data cards for optical photons allow to define the optical
properties in materials and at boundaries only for specific
frequencies, as you say, while user routines are more general and allow
to give a more complete representation of the physical problem.

For example, the refraction index can be defined with the OPT-PROP
card for the central frequency that one has defined, but for an extended
dispersion relation, one can use the routine RFRNDX implementing a
function or interpolating a data array.
The refraction index can also be varied with a region-based logic using
the function OPHBDX. The same applies also to the other optical
properties like absorption and diffusion coefficients.
